As my book launch for Melt draws near, I thought it only appropriate to experience a “Meltdown!”
Each day until November 6, I’ll be sharing a tidbit of “insider information” about Melt: its content, its inspiration and my writing process creating it.
Light the candles on my altar!
Let the wax dripping begin:
You may know that this book revolves around The Wizard of Oz in a metaphorical way. Dunkin’ Donuts is a key setting in the story. The obvious reason (stated in the book) is that it’s “Munchkinland.” But there’s another reason I wanted to include Dunkin’ Donuts in Melt: as an homage to the local Dunkin Donuts where I wrote parts of Melt and my previous novels. It became a ritual for me to sit with an extra-large coffee and type away on my laptop. I did it every day as soon as Howard Stern ended (this was when he was on the air five days a week.) Back then (I wrote Melt ten years ago) I could tune out music in places. I didn’t even hear what was playing in Dunkin’ Donuts, nor was I bothered by its blaring fuchsia walls. Now, I can’t write there anymore. I need silence. Plus, their coffee seems to have weakened. Or have I gotten stronger?
In any case, I will always be grateful for Dunkin’ Donuts: my sometime comfort zone and unlikely inspiration.
Bye for now.
