2024 is the Bicentennial of Lafayette's Triumphant Return

1. Nineteen-year-old French nobleman Marquis de Lafayette left his family and wealthy lifestyle behind because he believed in America’s desire for independence. He defied his king’s order to stay in France, paid for his own ship and crew, managed to learn English during the month-long voyage despite being violently seasick, and volunteered for the Continental Army when the Continental Congress refused his services.

2. As the Continental Army was being defeated at the Battle of Brandywine, Lafayette rode his horse into the field and convinced the terrified American troops not to run away in fear. A musket ball shot through his leg, and he pressed on despite the agonizing pain. Without his heroism, there wouldn’t have been an army left to fight another day.

3. Lafayette convinced the French king to send troops as well as weapons and ammunition to the Continental Army. We could never have won the war without our French alliance and Lafayette's contributions. 

4. Lafayette supported Washington and helped him gain intelligence during this dark moment when Washington’s officers plotted a mutiny against Washington which threatened to destroy democracy.

5. Lafayette cornered British Commander Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, and sent word to Washington that their final victory was secured. The French fleet blocked British ships from fleeing, and the American Revolution was won. 

“I hope you will keep Lord Cornwallis safe, without provisions or forage until we arrive,” Washington wrote to Lafayette while en route to Yorktown.

6. Lafayette's triumphant return in 1824 rekindled America's pride, and inspired Americans to celebrate our nation's history.
